2.5.23 Sermon Afterthoughts

Greetings Church,

A theme we will continue to see throughout our study of Malachi is the faithfulness of our covenant-keeping God. He will always be who He is and will always do what He said He would do.  We see this even in the name by which He introduces Himself to Moses: I am who I am.  God is who He is and that is true in every time and every place.  He is a God who does not change and will always be true to His Word.  As our Father, He calls us to be like Him in this way.  We are to be faithful in our word and keep the vows which we make.

This weekend, we spent much of our time talking to husbands about the vows they made to lead and love and cherish their wives.  I had one of your brothers come up to me after the service and say that the reason he believed we are in the mess we are in as a nation is that men stopped being men and abdicated the responsibility God had given them.  We could make this claim about the church as well.  It has been true for decades that the majority of volunteers in the church are the women.  The majority of teachers in children's ministry are women.  And while we are immensely grateful for these women, men have, by and large, neglected the duties God has given them in the church. Yet, in His kindness, the Lord is calling us to repentance. He's calling men to a renewed sense of the duty of leadership, both in the church and in the home.

I heard a song the other day on the way to church and it just kept repeating the phrase: "God is doing something."  I couldn't help but agree and yet I know that much of what He's doing will be through the faithful obedience of His sons and daughters here at FBC.  Below are a few questions for us to ponder?

1. What does faithfulness look like for you in the home? In the church? In the community?

2. Are there people in our lives from whom we need to seek forgiveness for how we have not been faithful in our words and deeds?

3. How might God use you to encourage your brothers and sisters in Christ here at FBC?  Pray for those opportunities and be faithful as the Lord gives them.
