2.26.23 Sermon Afterthoughts

Greetings Church Family,

We are quickly nearing the end of our study through the book of Malachi and I hope you have found it as challenging as I have.  Malachi has always called me to account when it comes to how I approach the corporate gathering in worship.  I've sought to be honest with you that I can oftentimes find myself focusing on how the service is going, what we should have done, how it could have been planned better, what notes were hit, what words were said, etc. and completely forget that I have come to worship the High King of heaven and earth. This was also a problem in Malachi's day.  The people were gathering for worship and they were checking the boxes of what they were meant to do. What they weren't doing was turning their hearts to God.  They had come to the place where their relationship with God had become nothing more than checked boxes, things they were meant to do and not to do.

Many of us have done that before.  Some of you may read that paragraph and think that it describes you currently.  Here's the good news for you.  God comes to you, calling you to account, and His word to you, just like His word to Israel, finds its foundation in love.  He loves you!  And He desires you to know Him and find your all in Him.  He wants to be for you the source of joy and strength that carries you, not only through this life, but through all of eternity.

We started the service with the words of Isaiah 66:2 and I want you to hear them again and spend time this week thinking on them.  The Lord says:  But this is the one to whom I will look; he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. Below are some questions for you to consider.

1. What does it look like to be humble and tremble at God's word?

2. In what ways might you be prone to think serving God doesn't matter?

3. Salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone so where does the pursuit of holiness fit?
